EXCITING DOUBLES MATCHES HIGHLIGHT STC CLUB
The STC Club Championships concluded with exciting doubles matches in all events to top off a weekend of superb tennis competition. Matt Meyer and Robbie Azzarelli upended the defending champions Curtis Althouse and Steve Lehan 4-6, 7-5, (10-8) in the Men's A Doubles event. The match was characterized by many fast exchanges at the net and excellent recoveries.
The Women's A Doubles had a similar character as Laurie Fiegleman and Debbie Ott recovered from a sluggish start to edge Angie Kluss and Amber Jadus 0-6, 7-6(3), (10-7). The Men's B Doubles also had a number of long points with Kevin and Joe Vinson successfully defending their title with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Jerry Hahn and Donnie Bockelkamp. With this win Vinson turned the tables on Hahn, who outlasted him earlier in the day in the Men's B Singles final, winning 3-6, 6-4, (10-6).
Other singles champions included Phil Mercurio, Cati Colmenares-Wiss, and Susan Arp. In a rematch of last year's Men's A Singles final, Mercurio got a stiffer challenge from Joe Reese, winning 6-1, 7-6(3) . The Women's A Singles title went to Colmenares-Wiss, who used powerful ground strokes to upset second-seeded Jody Jackman 6-2, 6-2. Arp won the Women's B Singles title in a very competitive match with Maia Philbin, winning 4-6, 6-2, (10-4).
In the Men's A Singles semifinals Mercurio outlasted Jack Lennox 6-2, 6-3, while Reese eliminated Doug Klamp 6-1, 6-4. Colmenares-Wiss was extended to the limit by defending champion Kelly Arp, before winning 4-6, 7-5, (12-10), while Jackman won a hard-hitting battle with Grace Farrell 6-3, 6-4. Vinson and Hahn had decisive wins in their semifinal matches, with Vinson whipping Luke Klamp 6-1, 6-0 and Hahn taking out Kyle Wind 6-2, 6-3.
To reach the Women's A Doubles final, Kluss and Jadus eliminated Susan Arp and her mother Kelly 6-4, 6-0, while Fiegleman and Ott ousted Kathleen McKenna and Camilla Rinaldi 6-4, 6-2 . In Men's A Doubles semifinal action Althouse and Lehan took out Phil Mercurio and Jack Lennox 6-3, 6-0, while Meyer and Azzarelli were victors over Doug Klamp and Dan Fowler 6-0, 6-3.
