A good time was had by all as STC celebrated 90 years strong with a hosted BBQ on Saturday June 22nd. STC Board member Denise Marcos and husband Frank served up a great day for all members and their families to enjoy. There was delicious BBQ, games, rock painting, good tunes and a gathering of all who enjoy the courts and community at STC. Cheers to the next 90 years! Wishing all a good season.
You are invited to participate again in the sixth annual Lackawanna County Open Tennis Tournament at Scranton Tennis Club (STC) on July 11-14. It will feature men's and women's singles and doubles in A and B Divisions. The B Division events are open to players who have NTRP ratings of 3.0 or below. All matches will be scheduled, and singles players should plan on being available on Thursday and Friday evening and on Saturday and Sunday. Singles events will be limited to the first 32 players who sign up in each division. Doubles events will be limited to 16 entries.
This tournament is one of the few adult tournaments in the area, and gives players an opportunity to play against the best players in the area and beyond. 2018 A Division champions included Cesar Leon, who won both the singles and doubles (with his brother Michael), and Bella Peters, who won the singles crown and paired with Lauren Koczwara for the doubles title. Players must be 15 years old as of July 11 to participate.
The entry fee for singles is $15 for STC members and $20 for non-members. For doubles it is $15/team for STC members and $20/team for non-members. The club will provide balls, awards for all finalists, and a luncheon for the players on Saturday, July 13. The entry deadline is Monday, July 8 at 5 pm. An entry blank is attached. The entry fee must be paid before the entry deadline. Players may drop their entry form and check in the mailbox on the porch at the club or mail it to Scranton Tennis Club, P.O. Box 678, Clarks Summit, PA 18411. Checks should be made out to Scranton Tennis Club.
If you have any questions, please contact STC Tennis Director John Weiss at 570-586-0434. Mr. Weiss and former Bloomsburg University tennis coach, Burt Reese, are co-directors of the tournament.

Robbie Azzarelli and Kristen Victory captured the title in the June 8th STC Blind Draw Mixed Doubles tournament with a 5-1 win over Tim Aikman and Maggie Ferraro in the final. For Azzarelli it was his fifth consecutive Blind Draw win, while Victory, a new club member, won in her first attempt. Azzarelli and Victory almost didn't make it to the final, having to win a tiebreaker 7-5 to defeat Ravi Vinayak and Kelly Arp in one semifinal, while Aikman and Ferraro had an easier time knocking off the top-seeded team of John Lucas and Veronica Hernandez 5-1.
A total of 15 teams enjoyed the beautiful weather and lively action. Many thanks to Joe McNulty, Kathleen McKenna, and some volunteers for getting the courts ready, and for Diana Shields for providing the lovely breakfast spread.
The next tournament will be the Lackawanna County Open on July 11-14.
John Weiss, Tournament Director
